This is America

Screen Shot 2018-02-01 at 11.27.14 AM

Regret Iyer Productions proudly invites you to its most ambitious project yet. An epic adventure in the wilds of America!

Through Shravan Regret Iyer’s eyes and eloquence, this project takes you on a visual journey from exploring the underground network of caves that can only be accessed by boat, to a journey on the world’s first mountain-climbing cog railway. It is a journey of more than 10,000 miles (explored over a period of last one-and-a-half-years and still ongoing as part of 3lenses series) from flying over the borders of Canada on a charter jet for fall foliage to the far southern portion of the East coast where fairy tale creatures dwell.

Experience the stories of people and their rich culture and traditions, and a closer look at the species and places. Experience the East coast like never before. Shravan Regret Iyer’s “This is America – All New”

North American Gray Wolf, also known as timber wolf. They have the most powerful jaws — 42 highly specialized teeth — with a biting capacity of 1000 and 1500 pounds per square inch!
Gray wolves were once considered to have had the largest ranges of any species – spanning throughout Eurasia, North America and the Africa, covering the entire continental northern hemisphere.
Some records suggests that there were up to 400,000 wolves in the US alone, sadly these species were hunted to near extinction in the continental US. Today, there are only about 9,000 in the United States.
The range of a wolf pack typically varies from 80- 300 miles, but in extreme northern regions, there territories they can cover over 1000 sq miles!
They can survive without food for 17 days in the wild.
For Native American wolves are a special creature that deserve utmost respect. They are also known as a guide to the spiritual world. In fact some tribes give all credit of their hunting ability to the wolves. They say they learnt hunting by watching these wolves!

Despite the brutal cold and strong wind, a small variety of mammals survive in the cold, arctic conditions found in the summit of Mount Washington. Species like foxes; squirrels, mice, weasels, and bobcats can be found around the summit area. Even wandering moose and beavers have braved the events to visit the upper reaches of the mountain.
Among all, Common Ravens frequent the summit delighting spectators with their acrobatics! During summer months other bird species like white throated sparrows, juncoes, and pipits reside in or near the alpine meadows. What is more surprising is that stink bugs and even mosquitoes reach the summit during the brief milder conditions of summer!

This is the Tip-Top House, the oldest surviving building in the summit area of Mount Washington and delivered by the state to be the oldest extant mountain-top hostelry in the world. It was built in 1853. During that time the building’s flat roof was used to place large telescopes to create an observatory. The building stands adjacent to Mount Washington Summit (extreme right in the photograph) at 6,288 feet, the tallest mountain in the northeastern United States.

Can you spot the Cog?
The Mount Washington Cog Railway track length is approximately 3.0 miles. And it takes about 65 minutes to ascend to the summit and 40 minutes to descend.
Jacob’s Ladder, which is located approximately 4,800 feet height is the steepest section of the Cog’s trestle. It is a 300-foot trestle with a 37% grade. This means that there is an elevation difference of 13 feet between passengers in the front and back of the coach. For every 100 feet, a passenger moves in a Cog coach, he or she is simultaneously ascending 37′ 4″ up the side of Mount Washington.
Meanwhile, each trip to the summit on the Cog uses about one ton of coal and around 1,000 gallons of water! The Cog still runs two steam locomotives along with the six biodiesel locomotives.
In the following weeks, we will explore this engineering marvel and see and feel what it is to be like on the highest peak, at 6,288 ft, in the northeastern United States.

The dune grasslands in Maine are critical breeding habitat for two species of endangered shorebirds: least terns and piping plovers. Other ground-nesting bird species using these habitats include laughing gills and short-eared owls. Sadly, nesting habitats of these birds have been reduced by human use of beaches. The dune grasslands occur on coastal sand dunes between high tide line and back dune marshes abutting uplands.

The Sand beach in Acadia is just 290 yards long and is nestled between the granite mountains and rocky shores on the eastern side of Mt Desert Island in Maine, USA.
Thousands of years of pounding surf has created a beach with unique sand of shell fragments.
One can find a hiking trail next to the beach, and it is of course pet-friendly.

At 1,530 feet this is the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard and the first place to view sunrise in the United States during October through March.
Cadillac Mountain, formerly known as Green Mountain, is one of 30 mountains on Mount Desert Island in Maine. These textured rocks are formed by volcanic activity, which injected diabase, a fine-grained, Black ingenious rock into the granites and surrounding rocks.
Meanwhile, there are about 19 islands around Acadia National Park. However, only five of them (Mount Desert Island, Isle summer Haut, Bar island, Baker island and little Cranberry island) have public access. Most of the islands are the nesting ground for birds.

As many as 1, 100 plant species are found in Acadia National Park in Maine, USA – including 400 indigenous plant species.
Each year during fall season one can see the spectacular display of colours by different plant species.
Following the 1947 fire, a new forest filled with birch, maple and aspen have sprung amid the surviving evergreens. This eventually has led to an increase in the intensity of fall foliage and diversity of Acadia’s woodlands.
This photograph was taken, during the peak of fall 2017, from a chartered plane.
