This is the world’s first mountain-climbing cog railway in New Hampshire, USA.
The railway popularly known as The Mount Washington Cog Railway is still in operation since its first climb to Mount Washington in the year 1869.
Today it is a National Historic Engineering landmark and an American heritage.
In the following weeks, we will explore this engineering marvel and see and feel what it is to be like on the highest peak, at 6,288 ft, in the northeastern United States.

This is ‘Thunder Hole’, a natural rock inlet where waves from the sea crash with a thunderous boom and high-flying foam in Bar Harbor, Maine.
The small cavern formed just beneath the surface of the water causes the sound of a distant thunder. With right size wave rolling into the inlet, water may splash as high as 40 feet in the air with a thunder roar.

The dune grasslands in Maine are critical breeding habitat for two species of endangered shorebirds: least terns and piping plovers. Other ground nesting bird species using these habitats include laughing gills and short-eared owls. Sadly, nesting habitats of these birds has been reduced by human use of beaches. The dune grasslands occur on coastal sand dunes between high tide line and back dune marshes abutting uplands.

The sand beach in Acadia is just 290 yards long and is nestled between the granite mountains and rocky shores on the eastern side of Mt Desert Island in Maine, USA.
Thousands of years of pounding surf has created a beach with unique sand of shell fragments.
One can find a hiking trail next to the beach, and it is of course pet friendly.

At 1,530 feet this is the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard and the first place to view sunrise in the United States during October through March.
Cadillac Mountain, formerly known as Green Mountain, is one of 30 mountains on Mount Desert Island in Maine. These textured rocks are formed by volcanic activity, which injected diabase, a fine-grained, Black ingenious rock into the granites and surrounding rocks.
Meanwhile, there are about 19 islands around Acadia National Park. However only five of them (Mount Desert Island, Isle summer Haut, Bar island, Baker island and little Cranberry island) have public access. Most of the islands are nesting ground for birds.

As many as 1, 100 plant species are found in Acadia National Park in Maine, USA – including 400 indigenous plant species.
Each year during fall season one can see the spectacular display of colours by different plant species.
Following the 1947 fire, a new forest filled with birch, maple and aspen has sprung amid the surviving evergreens. This eventually has led to an increase in the intensity of fall foliage and diversity of Acadia’s woodlands.
This photograph was taken, during the peak of fall 2017, from a chartered plane.

A tiny island paradise in the middle of nowhere? Who doesn’t want to be there?
There are about 19 islands around Acadia National Park in Maine. However only five of them (Mount Desert Island, Isle summer Haut, Bar island, Baker island and little Cranberry island) have public access.
Most of the islands are nesting ground for birds and can only be observed by boat or from air.
I had an opportunity to photograph this natural wonder from a chartered plane.
