USA_4129-1 — The state of the wildlife!
Cougar also know as the mountain lion, puma, panther is an ambush predator and pursues a wide variety of prey. It’s is native to the americas and it’s range spreads across Canada to South America. There are several subspecies of cougar. One mountain lion subspecies – the Florida Panther is listed as critically endangered with less than 100 individuals. Across the US an estimated 30,000 cougars live in the wild. Increasing habitat loss and hunting for sports has caused decline in the population.

USA_9027 — A breathtaking view of the Great Smoky Mountains.
The mountain range falls along the Tennessee-North Carolina border in the southern United States.
The name ‘smoky’ comes from the natural fog that often hangs over the range and presents as large smoke plumes from the distance.
It is part of the International Biosphere Reserve and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The range is home to 187, 000 acres of old growth forest.

It is indeed a spectacle to watch a flock of starlings preparing to roost for the night. Researchers have analyzed the movements of starlings flocks and found that the intricate aerial dances is actually not due to a designated leader’s choice, but due to a few birds that clump closely together and they are the ones that call the shots when it comes to turning. Ones these birds begin to turn, the message spreads fast “about 20 ~ 40 meters per second” meaning a flock of 400 birds needs just about half a second to turn! And this movement is in fact similar to that of superfluid helium. USA_2212 — An adult male Northern Cardinal in snow. They look especially bright — with striking red plumage — in the winter against the fresh snow.
They are song birds — and unlike many species of songbirds where only the male birds can vocalize — both male and female Cardinals can sing. Female Cardinal sing when they are in the nest as a way to signal male Cardinal to bring food to the nest.
The Cardinal is considered as state bird in seven U.S. states.

As winter sets in, Ice Sculptors demonstrate their fine craftsmanship across the United States. Using just ice as the raw material and by tools such as chainsaws and specialty bits fitted to a die grinder, artists create stunning sculptures. It takes only about 15~20mins to create sculptures like these and the lifetime of a sculpture is fact determined primarily by the temperature of its environment, thus a sculpture can last from mere minutes to possibly months! Ice sculptures have a rich history and some evidence suggests people may have been carving ice as early as 600 B.C.
