Welcome to ‘This is Cambodia’ a virtual journey captured through the eyes of Shravan Regret Iyer.
This is the southern entrance gate to Angkor Thom (meaning Great City) located in Siem Reap, Cambodia. This ancient city was established in the late twelfth century, and covers an area of around nine square kilometer. The city lies on the West bank of the Siem Reap river and was abandoned in the early 15th century and believe to have sustained a population of 80,000–150,000 people.
The faces on the 23m towers at the city entrance gates are believed to be either those of the King Jayavarman Vll, bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, guardians of the empire’s cardinal pints or some combination of these.
