Arctic Wolf also know as the Polar wolf or White wolf, a subspecies of the gray wolf, live in the most inhospitable terrain in the world where temperatures rarely raises above -30 degree Celsius. Thanks to its isolation the Arctic wolf is not a threatened species, but faces other challenges such as climate change. Here in a wolf preserve I had an opportunity to document the intimate life of these magnificent creatures. In the following weeks we will look closer into their hidden life.

One of the greatest wildlife management success stories in the history of the United States is Turkey Restoration Project. In the mid 1800’s, turkeys had almost disappeared in New Jersey due to the habitat changes and killing for food. In the year 1977 22 birds were reintroduced in the wild establish their population across the state. Today the state wide population of wild turkey is estimated to be around 23,000 with an annual harvest of around 3,000 birds.

Prairie dogs are born with long nails. They use them for digging and perfecting their home.
Their underground home consists of many different rooms including sleeping chambers, lavatory room, storage rooms and anti-flooding rooms incase of rain storms!

A family of Prairie dogs busy with their community police service – watching out for predators! And of course it makes for a good time to discuss family matters!
They are excellent at identifying predators and they have different calls for different predators. Scientists believe that their calls includes specific informations about the size of the predator, colours, direction of the approaching predator and the speed!
Truly extraordinary species to observe and learn from.

Prairie dogs are excellent civil engineers and spend most of their time improving their homes and household chores.
Their colony is called a dog town and it is divided into many coteries.
Their underground home consists of many different rooms including sleeping chambers, lavatory room, storage rooms and anti-flooding rooms incase of rain storms!
The main entrance (seen above in the picture) act as chimneys to draw air.
Truly a lot to learn from these incredible creatures!

Prairie dogs, a herbivorous burrowing rodents native to the grasslands of North America, live in an underground colony called a dog town. They are actually squirrels, but they bark and sound similar to actual dog’s bark!
There are five species of Prairie dogs – Black-tailed (pictured here), white-tailed, Gunnison’s, Utah and Mexican.

The state of the wildlife!
Cougar also know as the mountain lion, puma, panther is an ambush predator and pursues a wide variety of prey. It’s is native to the americas and it’s range spreads across Canada to South America. There are several subspecies of cougar. One mountain lion subspecies – the Florida Panther is listed as critically endangered with less than 100 individuals. Across the US an estimated 30,000 cougars live in the wild. Increasing habitat loss and hunting for sports has caused decline in the population.

Across the United States more than 10,000 big cats like tigers, lions and cougars are private owned. In states like Florida, Cougars listed under Class II animals, are allowed as exotic pets, but require a permit.
While many states issue permits, 21 states in the US have banned all dangerous exotic pets, but five states have no laws on keeping dangerous wild animals including North Carolina and South Carolina.
